Fear

Fear

When in the grip of fear,
The human face wears the aspect of a forest
Roaming restlessly in his eyes
Are to be seen ferocious beasts .

A man changes that way when seized with fear;
One feels as if the sum-total of darkness
In the entire world, is frozen within him
Somewhere in the depths of night (darkness, gloom)
In his innermost self.

Fear is a primordial instinct
Fear is a defense reaction
Fear is a merciful force
Fear does lead a man to a lonely island.

Fear opens the door to inner greatness
Fear is a flower dark in hue and cold
Fear is almost like death.

Only a thin dividing line
Separates the victim of fear
From the rest of the world.

The fear-struck man must stand within himself
As he would, when plunging down into a river
From a mountain peak, or flying out of a cage
Into the boundless sky.
Or stepping down from terra firma
Into a groundless empty space.

Then only,
Like a frog which can behold the sky
When the encasing rock is split open,
Like a man who can behold the world
When the obstructing hordes of thought
Are made to flee;

Then only
When the clouds of fear are dispersed,
Appears the sky of adventure
And the man’s face is lit up with a smile
A smile real and true!
